How We Research and Rate Products

EverydayHomeComfort is an independent research desk, not a testing lab.
We do not run proprietary lab tests, and we do not accept payment, free products, or manufacturer input in exchange for coverage or a higher score.
Every recommendation is built from published technical data, independent standards and regulatory sources, third-party engineering work, and a structured reading of verified owner reviews.
This page explains exactly how we do that, how we score, and how we keep it current.
It is versioned: the change log at the bottom records every substantive revision.

Our sources, in priority order

When sources disagree, the ones higher on this list carry more weight.
We cite the specific source next to every hard number in an article so you can check it yourself.

  1. Manufacturer technical documentation. Spec sheets, user manuals, and published test results (for example a suction figure stated as measured per IEC 62885-2:2021).
    We treat these as the starting point for specifications, and as claims to be checked for performance.
  2. Independent standards and regulatory bodies. IEC test standards, the AHAM Verifide directory for air purifier CADR and dehumidifier capacity, the US EPA for indoor air quality guidance, ENERGY STAR for efficiency data, the FCC ID database for wireless and internal-hardware detail, the CPSC for recalls, and CARB for air-cleaner certification. These override a manufacturer claim where they conflict.
  3. Third-party engineering analysis. Teardowns, component-level breakdowns, and long-term assessments from engineering-focused sources that do not sell the product.
  4. Verified-purchase owner reviews, aggregated and coded. We read owner reviews in volume across major retailers, weight them by recency and by whether the purchase is verified, and code recurring reports by type (for example: dock error, brush tangle, app disconnect) and by how many months into ownership they appear.
    We report the pattern, not a single anecdote.
  5. Community reports. Manufacturer-specific and category subreddits and established forums, used to find patterns worth investigating and to sanity-check the owner-review coding.
    We do not treat a forum post as a sole source for any claim.

How we resolve conflicting information

  • Specification conflicts (two sources list different numbers): we use the figure from the higher-priority source and state the standard or document it comes from.
    If a manufacturer figure cannot be traced to a test standard, we label it a manufacturer claim.
  • Claim versus reality (the spec looks good, owners disagree): we describe both.
    The specification tells you what the product is designed to do; the coded owner data tells you how often it does it.
    When these diverge, that gap is itself the finding, and we say so plainly.
  • Unresolved uncertainty: if we cannot source a number confidently, we cut it or mark it as an estimate.
    We do not publish a figure we have not verified.

The EverydayHomeComfort Score

Every product review carries an EverydayHomeComfort Score: a fixed set of category sub-scores from 1 to 10 and one overall rating.
The same rubric, sub-scores, and weights are applied to every product in a category, so scores are comparable across our reviews.
The score reflects how well the product serves the people it is built for, based on the sources above.
It is not a measurement from our own lab, because we do not operate one.

How the overall is calculated.
Each sub-score is assigned in whole or half points from 1 to 10 against the anchors below.
The overall rating is the weighted mean of the sub-scores, using the category weights in the tables that follow, rounded to one decimal place.
There is no separate editorial override: if the weighted mean changes, the published overall changes with it.

What each sub-score means

What the overall rating means

Comparisons and explainers do not carry a product score. Where one appears (for example a protocol or brand comparison), it rates each option only on the dimensions that decide that specific choice, and the page states what those dimensions are.

What we do not do

  • We do not run a physical test lab, and we never describe our work as “testing” a product.
  • We do not accept payment, gifts, hospitality, or pre-release access in exchange for coverage or a score.
  • We do not let affiliate relationships influence picks or ratings. Which retailers pay a commission has no bearing on what we recommend.
  • We do not chase publication volume at the expense of sourcing. A guide ships when its numbers are sourced and its rubric is filled in, not before.

We use advanced research and data tools to gather and cross-reference specifications and to organize large volumes of owner reviews.
Sourcing decisions, conflict resolution, and every score are directed by us.

How often we update

  • Robot vacuum articles: reviewed every 3 to 6 months, or when a new model in scope launches.
  • Air purifier articles: reviewed every 6 months.
  • Dehumidifier and fan articles: reviewed annually, or when a major new model launches.
  • How-to and explainer articles: updated when standards or best practices change.
  • Every article shows a visible “Last Updated” date, and the same date appears in the article’s structured data.

Corrections

If you spot an error, email info@everydayhomecomfort.com with the article and the specific claim.
We aim to respond within five business days.
When we change a substantive fact or a score after publication, we note it in the article’s update history with the date and what changed.
